From the very beginning, this collaboration has been guided by one clear priority: improving patient outcomes through thoughtful, responsive design.

A Partnership Rooted in Purpose

Our journey with Cincinnati Children’s began in October 2018, when Jeff Hummeldorf, Vice President at Casco Manufacturing Solutions, was approached by the hospital’s skin care team. They identified a serious and ongoing concern—traditional crib mattresses were contributing to skin breakdown in pediatric patients. For vulnerable children requiring extended care, this issue had real consequences for comfort, healing, and overall quality of care. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, our team committed to finding a better solution without delay.

Designing a Better Mattress for Better Outcomes

Working in close collaboration with Cincinnati Children’s care team, Casco developed a custom prototype prevention crib mattress specifically designed to address the challenges identified by clinicians. This was not an off-the-shelf solution; it was the result of active listening, iterative design, and a shared focus on patient safety and comfort.

The prototype underwent rigorous testing and demonstrated strong results in reducing skin breakdown. Based on these outcomes, the mattress was officially adopted by Cincinnati Children’s Hospital in July 2019, marking a significant milestone in the partnership and validating the impact of clinician-driven design.

Expanding the Impact

What began as a focused effort to solve a single problem soon evolved into a broader collaboration. Building on the success of the crib mattress, Casco now also produces C‑Matt Crib Side Rail Pads and Pediatric Positioning Wedges for Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. Each product reflects the same dedication to quality, innovation, and patient well-being that defined the original project, reinforcing our commitment to supporting healthcare providers with solutions they can trust.
